Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP, or the proposed EU-US Free Trade Agreement currently being negotiated) has the potential to enormously impact our economy and planet. What are the basis for the economic estimates, and what are the risk with mutual recognition versus harmonisation? This seminar in Brussels will attempt to shed a more detailed light on some of the questions involved in the debate.
TTIP is currently being negotiated between the EU and the US. The outcome is unclear, and the process is being criticised for being opaque, by Greens and many other groups. At the same time, as both sides are aiming for a ‘comprehensive’ agreement, we do know that any outcome will touch an on enormous range of areas. This includes food regulation, energy, decision-making and workers’ rights.
To make sure Green activists are extensively briefed on the ins and outs of the topic, GEF is offering a half-day seminar in Brussels on February 23rd, following the EGP electoral convention. Areas to be covered include the basics of EU trade policy, economic projections, impact on regulations and the process by which Trade Agreements are passed at EU-level.
Agenda
Session 1 (9.30 – 10.30): Analysing EU trade policy, evaluating past trade agreements, understanding key terms.
Session 2 (10.45 – 12.00): Regulation and trade policy, evaluating five key policy areas that will be impacted by the proposed TTIP
Session 3 (12.15 – 13.30): Transparency and trade policy, ISDS, how the agreement might be received in the European Parliament
Each session will have an extensive Q&A period to tease out the issues raised.
